When they found out about this they went out for a bite to eat. WhenJulie and Bill first met they were complete strangers to one another, however because they were on their own, in London during the state of war theydecided that a friend would be a good idea. At the restaurant Bill andJulie learned more about each other. At thi s point I think in thenovel Bill and Julie have no feelings for each other whatsoever, itssimply just a business partnership. They are both lonely, she hasmoney he doesnt and he knows his way about London and she doesnt. Atthis point in the novel Bill is trying to impress Julie as this isquite normal for an adolescent boy.The first real problem in the relationship occurs when Bill and Julieare at the park having a good time, until Bill spots his dad. This isa study turning point in their relationship as one little problemgrows and becomes a crisis when Bill cant decide if he wants to goget his father or stay with Julie, if he chooses to go see his dad, hewill be sent to Wales and she will be sent to Canada ... ...lising he cant find her he visits every hospital inLondon asking for a Julie and they all reply no. He then runs until hecan run no more.When Bill eventually does get in to see Julie he cant really talk toher as her Mum and brother are in the room, so he sticks to smallta lk. Julies Brother Robin butts in and says look pal thanks foreverything but if there is anything more than a friendship then beatit. Bill is about to talk when Julie says dont be silly Robin of stemma there is nothing in it, nothing at all. After this Bill fellsthe worst he has ever felt in his life and thinks that the further wayout is death. Bill is so hurt by Julies comment that he wants to killhimself.Many years later after the war he looks back on his relationship withJulie and thinks to himself what if it was only a cover up and she didhave feelings for him.
